Costa Rica News – Costa Rica used to be part of a geographic region known as Pleistocene. This was during an ice age 2.58 million years ago.
The area had savannas and forests full of giant sized animals.
Imagine a five meter tall sloth. There were also giant armadillos, mastodons, toxodons, which are similar to rhinoceros, and mylodon, another type of sloth. Some of their remains have been fossilized and preserved.
The animals were herbivores and lived in arid, cold habitats. There was ice on the tops of high mountains, but the majority of the land had temperatures just six degrees lower than today.
There was a mass extinction of these giants, possibly due to climate change or human hunters.
The National Museum has several fossils from these five giant animals and they will be on display along with life-sized illustrations.
