A new online news media site in Costa Rica recently reported on a lawsuit that compensated a truck driver who suffered a road traffic accident after staring at the ample cleavage of an attractive Tica while driving in Heredia. Another news item explained the commercial warehouse shopping district in Golfito is planning a “Blacker Friday” in response to a successful Black November.

The news items mentioned above were published by El Pejibaye, which also reported on a United Nations study coinciding with the 65th anniversary of Costa Rica’s abolishment of her armed forces:

Days after celebrating the 65th anniversary of the abolition of its military, Costa Rica was voted the world’s third most powerful army-less nation, according to a United Nations study.

Costa Rica surged ahead in the world rankings this year due to its ferocious stance against Nicaragua over a meaningless piece of land no one cares about and the successes of female boxer Hannah Gabriel, the UN said.

If you have not caught on by now, El Pejibaye is a satirical blog that draws inspiration from news sources such as the Costa Rica Star to produce humorous material for expats who don’t get the humor of Pelando el Ojo or El Chinamo. The well-written entries follow the faux-serious style of well-known sites such as The Onion and the Duffel Blog. Take, for example, the following article:

Tourist Dies Outside CIMA Hospital As Taxista Couldn’t Make Change

ESCAZU – A Dutch tourist died outside CIMA hospital yesterday when his taxi driver was unable to make correct change for a 10,000 colones bill.

Niels Van Vliet, 56, was rushed to the hospital by taxi after experiencing chest pains during a mountain bike excursion in the Central Valley […] Initial reports suggest that Van Vliet suffered a heart attack as a result of elevated blood pressure due to the stress caused by the taxista and a diet that consisted of excessive cilantro.

Some of the content that El Pejibaye features has sadly taken place in reality. Take, for example, this late November story in El Pejibaye:

Gringo Family Says Costa Rica Their Favorite Caribbean Island

and compare it with this factual story published in September by the Costa Rica Star:

Colombian Model in Costa Rica Thinks She is in Puerto Rico

In the United States, news bureaus and even Members of Congress have been fooled by stories published by The Onion and the Duffel Blog. It is only a matter of time before El Pejibaye gets a similar honor.
