The Caribbean is well known for tarpon and snook. There are five regions that fishermen should know about. Between all of them, there is good fishing year round.
The central Pacific includes Jaco, Hermosa, Quepos, and Manuel Antonio. The famous part of this area is the Los Suenos Marina. Anglers leave from there or Quepos to catch sailfish. They almost never come back disappointed. 12-20 miles offshore, the blue waters are full of sailfish, marlin, tuna, dorado and wahoo. Inshore fishing is available near the rocks, reef, and river mouths. Roosterfish, snapper, jacks, mackerel and snook are found inshore.
Flamingo Beach, Tamarindo, Samara, and Carrillo make up the northern Pacific. Charter boats leave from various beaches in the Tamarindo area and from the Flamingo Beach Marina. This area is famous for marlin and sailfish.
The southern Pacific, including Drake Bay, Mata Palo, Puerto Jimenez, and Golfito, is home to at least six sport fishing companies. The inshore fishing in this southern region is unmatched. Anglers consistently bring in huge snapper and roosterfish.
The Caribbean coast is known around the world for tarpon and snook. There are countless lagoons and rivers between Barra del Colorado, Rio Colorado, Rio Tortuguero, and Rio Parismina. Tarpon in the area average 100 pounds and snook average 20 pounds. Larger boats can take anglers out into the Atlantic to catch sailfish, blue marlin, wahoo and dorado.
The north central region consists of Lake Arenal, Rio Frio, Cano Negro Lagoon, Lake Nicaragua, and the San Juan River. Both lakes have guapote, a Central American bass with a mouthful of teeth and a hard lump on their forehead. They are only 12 pounds, but fight at least twice as hard as most other bass. The rivers are home to tarpon, snook, and guapote.
