Costa Rica News – PANI, the National Child Welfare Agency took four children away from the same mother who last week sold her daughter for about $2.

The 32-year-old woman, Ocampo, lives in Aguas Zarcas, San Carlos.

The mother was drunk and gave the child to a neighbor who paid her ¢1,000.

PANI originally thought the girl was six months old but it has been confirmed that she is ten months.

PANI is now investigating claims from the man who says he is the baby’s father. They will do a paternity test. If positive, the baby may be sent with him or another family member.

The mother will be tried for child trafficking which carries an 8-20 year sentence. The case is in the preparatory stage in which evidence is collected and analyzed.

It may be argued that at the time she was not aware of her actions because of alcohol and/or drug use.
