Kolbi outageMobile customers of ICE, Costa Rica’s largest wireless carrier and former telecommunications monopoly, will experience extended periods of service outages during the week starting September 1st, 2014. The affected services include Kolbi wireless voice and data plans as well as the ability to add funds to prepaid accounts. In some cases, subscribers of landline telephone service will also experience outages.

According to a report by Rebeca Madrigal of online news daily Costa Rica Hoy, ICE made the announcement by means of paid radio and television spots as well as print newspaper ads. The service interruptions will take place due to ongoing maintenance of ICE’s wireless infrastructure.

  • On September 1st and 2nd, from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am, Kolbi mobile voice and Internet services will be disrupted in the Greater San Jose Metropolitan Area (Spanish initials: GAM).
  • On September 3rd and 4th, from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am, Kolbi mobile voice and Internet services will be disrupted in the GAM.
  • On September 1st and 2nd, mobile users who signed up for Kolbi prepaid plans will not be able to add funds to their accounts between the hours of 11:00 pm and 4:00 am. This would be a nationwide service interruption.
  • Furthermore, Kolbi subscribers in the Puntarenas communities of Esparza, La Palma in Puerto Jimenez and San Vito in Cotobrus will experience intermittent issues with their mobile voice and Internet plans during the morning hours of September 2nd and 3rd.
  • Nationwide outages are expected on September 5th and 6th for subscribers of landline telephone service and satellite Internet from 11:00 pm to 3:00 am.

The last time The Costa Rica Star reported major mobile voice and data of the Kolbi wireless service was back in March, when ICE was expanding its infrastructure to accommodate the continuing transition to 4G networks.
