Costa Rica Surfing – What else can you ask for in a town hosting the ISA World Surfing Games, great waves, good food and an infamous night life.
The 2016 ISA World Surfing Games will be held in Jacó, Costa Rica, between August 6th-14th.
The event organized by the International Surfing Association returns to the Central American nation seven years after being held in Playa Hermosa. Costa Rica will be able to defend its 2015 title in home waters.
The institution led by Fernando Aguerre hopes to attract to the resort city of Jacó more than 130 surfers from up to 30 countries. The ISA World Surfing Games might get underway with the sport confirmed in the Toky 2020 Olympics.
“With Team Costa Rica defending their title in their home waves and the pending Olympic announcement, this event has all the elements to be a monumental milestone for surfing,” notes Aguerre, president of the ISA.
Surfing is becoming a critical sports activity in Costa Rica. The country’s Institute of Tourism confirmed that over 200,000 tourists generated an impact of over $300 million in the national economy, in 2013.
“We envision a record-breaking world championship like in 2009, but above all we envision an extraordinary opportunity for tourism by showcasing the waves, athletes and people of Costa Rica,” adds Randall Cháves, president of the Costa Rican Surfing Federation.
