Ashley Madison is an infamous dating website that promotes adulterous sexual encounters among their members; in recent weeks, however, this site has been the subject of more than one cyber intrusion that resulted in the dissemination of confidential data.
According to a news report published by online news daily CRHoy.com, Spanish firm Tecnilogica determined that the Ashley Madison footprints of cheating users extends to more than 50,000 cities and towns in 48 countries.
Tecnilogica pinpointed cities where more than 10 subscribers could be found; in Costa Rica, those municipalities include: Alajuelita and Sabanilla in San Jose, Cóbano in Puntarenas, Pococí and Matina in Limón, Paraíso in Cartago, Ciudad Quesada in Alajuela, and Cañas in Guanacaste.
More than 85 percent of Ashley Madison users are men, which means that the opportunities for engaging in extramarital sex appear to be somewhat limited. Nonetheless, there are a few Ashley Madison nations where the would-be adulterers are predominantly female: Brazil, India, Japan, and South Africa.
In the end, Costa Rica contributes less than 0.5 percent of the 37 million Ashley Madison registered users; this is not surprising since Facebook is the platform of choice in Costa Rica for cheaters.
The following report on Ashley Madison comes from our international news wire partner, Agencia EFE:
Canadian users of Ashley Madison file class-action suit
Toronto, Aug 21 (EFE).– A group of Canadian users of AshleyMadison.com, a dating site for married people, is launching a class-acion suit for $760 million against the owner of the site, Avid Life Media, because of all the information hacked from that Web site about its millions of clients.
Local media said Friday that the lead plaintiff in the suit is Eliot Shore, described as a “disabled widower,” who, after his wife of 30 years died of breast cancer, “joined the website for a short time in search of companionship.”
The suit filed by the law offices of Charney Lawyers and Sutts, Strosberg LLP says that many former members of AshleyMadison.com “are outraged” by the fact that the Web site “failed to protect its users’ information.”
“In many cases, the users paid an additional fee for the website to remove all of their user data, only to discover that the information was left intact and exposed,” the attorneys said in a communique.
The law firms say that “Canadians from every province can join the lawsuit.”
A group of cyber-pirates known as The Impact Team published Wednesday 9.7 gigabytes of hacked data about users of AshleyMadison.com, including e-mail accounts and information related to credit card transactions.
Ashley Madison claims that the hacked data provides no proof of marital infidelity, since the information it collects is not enough to identify specific users.
The data did reveal, however, at least 500 e-mail accounts belonging to agencies of the Canadian federal government.
Soon before the hacked data were published, Avid Life Media announced that one out of every five inhabitants of Ottawa was registered with the Web site. EFE
