You can learn a lot by reading surf reports such as the size of the swells, the weather and any forecasts for the area. You can often find pictures and videos of the surfing spots as well. In Tamarindo, the swells are 4-5 ft on average with a duration of about 13 seconds.

Read the local rules before heading out
Each destination will have its own rules, whether those are regional, local or unspoken it’s a good idea to become familiar with local customs and laws before heading out. There’s no camping at Witches Rock for example, there’s one story of a group of surfers who were surfing and had fallen asleep on the beach. They were awakened by the sounds of machine guns being cocked in the hands of the local police.
Also, make sure to hit the surf shops to ask about local surf etiquette. There may be some local quirks about particular breaks or times of day.
