Santa Teresa, Puntarenas — Pollo Pass is a new discount service for travelers to the Santa Teresa area in Costa Rica. Pollo Pass is a discount bracelet that entitles the customer to discounts at local businesses including restaurants, bars, horseback riding, Spanish lessons, surf lessons, spas, yoga classes, and other attractions.

Santa Teresa is a popular destination for both luxury tourism and also travelers on a budget. Though Santa Teresa/Mal Pais hosts thousands of visitors annually, Pollo Pass is the only discount service in the lower Nicoya Peninsula. It is also the only discount service to feature such a wide range of different participating merchants.

Pollo Pass can be purchased online before a trip to Santa Teresa or can be picked up at one of the three pick-up locations in Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen: Pacific Dirt Road Rentals, Sea Kayak Adventures, and Casa Zen Hotel.

Travelers who purchase the pass simply wear the waterproof bracelet and show it to each participating merchant before paying. A complete list of participating merchants can be found on the Pollo Pass website.

Pollo Pass customers have the option to buy bracelets for different lengths of time. The basic pass is valid for seven days from the date of purchase and costs $24.99 USD, while the fourteen-day pass costs $34.99 USD and the thirty-day pass costs $49.99 USD. Customers are granted unlimited use of the bracelet for the duration of their pass subscription.

Pollo Pass was launched in February 2013 by two young entrepreneurial women from the United States, Haydee Stuart and Summer Breault. Both were semi- permanent residents in the Santa Teresa area before beginning this venture. They noticed that though some excursions and individual restaurants offered special discounts, there was no overarching discount service in the area. They also found that there is a large population of budget-conscious travelers coming to the Santa Teresa area who are looking to save money while traveling.

As a result, Ms. Stuart and Ms. Breault developed Pollo Pass primarily for the traveler market. However, Pollo Pass can also be purchased and used by locals or those staying in the Santa Teresa/Mal Pais area for longer periods of time.

More information about Pollo Pass, as well as a complete list of merchants can be found on the Pollo Pass website, www.pollopass.com.
