A total of 41.6 kilometers of cantonal routes located in the province of Puntarenas will see their condition improved, thanks to the execution of 11 projects that are part of the Cantonal Road Network Program 2.

This Program is developed by the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, through the Executing Unit, in conjunction with local governments, contributions from the Costa Rican Oil Refinery and technical advice from the German Cooperation Agency GIZ.

Six of the works are located in the macroeconomic region of the Central Pacific (in the cantons of Puntarenas, Esparza, Garabito, Montes de Oro, Quepos) and five in the Brunca Region (Osa, Coto Brus and Buenos Aires).

So far there are 3 projects completed, these are two rural roads in Esparza (2.5 km and 2 km) and one in Quepos (4.7 km), where interventions were carried out in the drainage system for the correct canalization of rainwater.

There are 6 more works in progress, also aimed at improving drainage and road. One in Montes de Oro (4.3 km), one in Garabito (5.3 km), two in Osa (2.5 km each), one in Buenos Aires (7.9 km) and one in Coto Brus ( 5.8 km).

Two more projects have a start-up order and are about to start, located in Puntarenas (Barranca 1.7 km) and in Buenos Aires (2.4 km). These interventions would be completed between December 2020 and January next year, and include road and drainage improvements.

The first 5 packages of the Cantonal Road Network Program 2 where the aforementioned works are located total 48 road infrastructure projects located in 36 cantons of the country, in which resources that reach ₡20,799 million are invested, coming from the loan with the Inter-American Bank Development for a total amount of $144 million.
