The life and times of one of the most iconic and controversial musicians in the history of rock ‘n’ roll have been adapted for the stage by a Costa Rica-based author.

Some readers of The Costa Rica Star and Jaco Beach residents are familiar with Britt Nelson, a *** with a long and illustrious journalism career in the United States. Growing up in the DC area in the 50s, Mr. Nelson’s first job was as a newspaper boy for the Washington Post. It was at the age of 8 that he first began collecting headlines and magazine covers, his first purchase being a 3-inch stack of Punch magazines from London dated 1883.

Mr. Nelson’s passion for news continued into his adult life. After graduating with a degree in Mass Communications, he embarked on a long and storied award-winning career in journalism, writing for papers within the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group throughout the southeastern United States before finally retiring as news editor for the Palatka Daily News in 2002. In 2011, five years after the passing of his wife, Mr. Nelson moved to Costa Rica sight unseen. With him, came his historical archives: over 400 pieces of history and pop culture captured through newspaper headlines and magazine covers.

In addition to being well-versed in the journalism field, Mr. Nelson also has a keen interest in the history of rock music and related genres such as blues and soul, which explains how James Douglas Morrison: A Rock & Roll Musical came to life. Here’s an excerpt from the play, a scene that recalls a historical and notorious event in Jim Morrison’s life: the riot at the L.A. Bowl during a live performance by The Doors:

Curtain goes up on Jim Morrison’s Sunset Strip motel room.

“Roadhouse Blues” continues.

What we see is a dimly lit, cheap double-bed motel room with Pamela, Morrison’s longtime girlfriend, sitting in a chair (stage right) with her feet up on a stool, smoking a cigarette. The sounds we hear appear to be coming from the FM stereo & TV set up in the motel room. Pamela is visibly high. A member of the Doors road crew comes into the motel room without knocking. The roadie crosses the room to Pamela and begins to tell her the details about what just happened at the L.A. Bowl concert.

Roadie: “Pam! Jim went over the edge tonight! You should have been there. I’m still shaking.”

FM Radio bulletin begins as “Roadhouse Blues” fades out.

Radio announcer:

“We are about to receive a live broadcast from the L.A. Bowl where the Doors just finished their show, but apparently something has gone wrong. There was a riot…and people are injured. Let’s go now to the concert scene.”

On scene radio reporter is very excited and begins to describe the scene. (Below the announcer are emergency vehicle sirens.)

Live radio reporter:

“The stage here at the L.A. Bowl is on fire…firefighters are busy as paramedics with stretchers are running through the crowd. There seems to be many people injured. Jim Morrison, lead singer did everything he could to incite a riot and this band, the Doors, backed him to the hilt.”

Pamela reacts to news bulletin. She is obviously pleased as friends and roadies begin to gather in the motel room.
