Enchanted Tree House in Cahuita
Homes perched on trees and nestled within the jungle forest canopy are not so unusual in Costa Rica. In 2012, The Costa Rica Star featured the Finca Bellavista sustainable treetop community in the Osa Peninsula, which is as close as you can get to an Ewok village. Since then, Finca Bellavista has appeared on CNN and other prominent media outlets. There’s even a home in Playa Santa Teresa that is held aloft by a mysterious force field.
This particular HomeAway listing, Topo’s Tree House, is located in Cahuita, in the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and not far from Puerto Viejo. The beach is also nearby. Staying in this home perched on the branches of a giant rubber tree will cost $260 per night, and the landlord speaks German and English as well as Spanish.
The Santa Teresa Geodesic Dome
Surfers will love staying at this interesting two-story structure located just a couple of hundred meters from one of the best spots in Costa Rica. Geodesic domes and shipping containers are often mentioned whenever sustainable home construction is discussed, and they can both be found in Costa Rica -although not as frequently as they should be. Only $80 per night.
A Boeing 727 in the Trees
The Costa Rica Star has previously reported on a former United States military cargo with an interesting Cold War background that has been converted into a bar/restaurant in Manuel Antonio. A similar repurposing operation was applied to an old 727 passenger aircraft, which is now part of an elaborate two-bedroom tree house also in Manuel Antonio. This HomeAway.com listing ranges between $250 to $750 per night, depending on the season.
