Fuel-efficiency and clean emissions will soon be part of the public transportation system of the Guanacaste province. As part of a greater effort to turn Costa Rica into a carbon neutral nation, the Reyna del Campo transportation firm of Guanacaste recently announced that it had obtained a line of credit from the Bank of Costa Rica (BCR) to finance the acquisition of new bus fleet running on hybrid electric/fuel buses.

Reyna del Campo currently operates two main routes in Costa Rica. Route 506 between Liberia and Puntarenas is very popular among backpackers and other visitors who wish to explore the beaches of Costa Rica’s Gold Coast. Route 524 runs from Liberia to Canas. In the near future, passengers will enjoy a comfortable and eco-friendly trip aboard brand-new hybrid buses manufactured by Korean firm Daewoo.

BCR was the first financial institution in Costa Rica to offer special financing for public transportation firms in Costa Rica. The Korea Eximbank and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation signed cooperation agreements with BCR in this regard. Japan has shown keen interest in developing the province of Guanacaste as the “greenest” and most ecologically conscious in Costa Rica; to this end, the Costa Rica Star recently reported on the upcoming clean energy power plant project announced by Ambassador of Japan Mamoru Shinohara.

The BCR special financing for eco-friendly public transportation fleets is not limited to Daewoo hybrid buses. Taxi and bus firms can choose other options such as electric vehicles and biofuels. In the past the Costa Rica Star has reported on the scarcity of electric and hybrid vehicles in Costa Rica, which runs counter to the country’s efforts to become carbon neutral by the year 2021. This special financing for green public transportation seeks to alleviate that issue.
