2013 was a great year for tropical Nu-Disco/Dance-Pop band Patterns from San Jose. Their infectious single Sunny Days (video above) received major radio airplay in Costa Rica and around the world, thanks in great part to the song’s colorful and surreal video, which saw its debut on the popular website Noisey, part of the Vice online network. Here’s a closer look at the masterful production of this video, part of which was filmed in Guanacaste.

The director of photography for Sunny Days is Pat Scola, who has done work for Vampire Weekend and Alt J (Breezeblocks). Australian filmmaker duo KROZM, known for their work with Jet and Miami Horror, directed this video, which was locally produced by Florisabel Fernandez (she has worked with Costa Rican Ska sensation Percance).

The first official remix of Sunny Days was handled by Fred Falke, who has worked with U2 and Katy Perry. For the video, Mr. Scola used an utlra-high resolution EPIK X 5K digital camera to capture the beauty of Jaco Beach, Playa Esterillos, the city of Atenas (province of Alajuela), and Guanacaste.

This catchy song evokes the music of bands such as Capital Cities, who take their cue from the great dance rhythms of the 1970s and the synth-driven sensibility of the 1980s. The video is better described by MTViggy:

Visions of Costa Rica generally include sun, surf, and lush tropical landscapes. San José-based band Patterns show off the destination vacation highlights of their country in a humorous light in the video for “Sunny Days.” Its tourism reps are a pair of love-struck, body-building abnormalities having the time of their lives. The long montage is a little bit of perfection to accompany Patterns’ glistening nu-disco sound.

According to the band’s online biography:

Patterns is a dance-pop band formed in San Jose, Costa Rica in 2012. Patterns’ members produce and compose their own music. Michelle writes all the lyrics and handles vocals. Allan plays guitar and synthesizers along with Mario, who also plays drums. Luigi plays bass.
