The Grand Plaza cruise ship was last eighth in Puntarenas August, which kicked off the docked cruise line 2011-2012 season.
8th August marked the beginning of the season in Costa Rica with the arrival of the Gran Plaza cruise ship in Puntarenas.
In 2009-2010, ports around the country welcomed 264 cruise ships and bring 385363 visitors in the country, these are the highest figures of the country in the last fifteen years has seen. This number of visitors is higher by 5.4% than the 2008-2009 season and 20.5% higher than the figure for the period 2007-2008.
The Minister for Tourism, Allan Flores, said that despite the decline in the number of tourist shipping company in the world, Costa Rica has been a steady stream of cruise line inputs and visitors to the country receive.
"The beginning is to promote the shipping season, the possibility of Costa Rica in this market. We have made various efforts to ensure that cruise line activity remains from competitive," said Flores.
The beginning of the season started with the arrival of the Great Britain Grand Plaza cruise ship that will dock in Puntarenas. This cruise ship weighs 77 tons and has a capacity of 1,950 passengers. The ship has 4 levels, glass elevators, a casino, a discotheque, a cinema, laundry service, a spa, a library, shops, a gym, four swimming pools, a basketball court, golf simulator, among other attractions.
Along with the arrival of the Gran Plaza cruise liner there will be an official ceremony to commence the start of the cruise line season on Monday, at 9 am in Puntarenas. There will be cultural events such as a traditional masquerade parade to welcome the first visitors of the season.
Flores added that the ICT is working with other Central American countries to the opportunities that offer port cities to create and plan routes Cruise Line, to involve the various tourist destinations and generate more visitors.
