According to Mashable, a leading British-American website covering Internet technology and social media, Costa Rica is among the top 10 most-searched travel destinations in the world. The data was provided by Bing, Microsoft’s flagship search engine property, and it shines a light on how tourism and hospitality operators are taking advantage of these trends to capture leads and to further expand the local economy.
On the list of top ten travel search terms published by Mashable, Costa Rica ranks at number six. Mashable describes our country as follows:
Costa Rica is a popular destination for both surf and yoga retreats. The busy season coincides with winter in the U.S. and Canada, and is also Costa Rica’s dry season, making its beaches more hospitable. Expect to see lots of families traveling together over winter or spring breaks.
This is not the first time major search engines have focused on Costa Rica and its popularity among Internet searchers. Back in April 2012, the Costa Rica Star reported on Google’s Research Online Purchase Offline report, which found that:
[ ] foreigners searching on Google for tourism information about Costa Rica are based in Canada, Central America, Puerto Rico, and the United States. Within the latter nation, people from Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, and Wyoming do most of the searches. They usually input the following search terms:
- Costa Rica vacations
- Costa Rica resorts
- Costa Rica flights
- Guanacaste beaches
- Flamingo
- Playa Grande
A month later, Bing used Costa Rica as an example for its Sidebar feature, which was one of Microsoft’s first forays into incorporating social media content into search results:
For example, if youre searching for diving spots in Costa Rica, with the new Bing, you may discover that one of your Facebook friends knows a great spot, based on photos from their last trip to Costa Rica that they shared on Facebook. Or you might find a friend who lives in Costa Rica based on his or her Facebook profile.
The Costa Rica Star is well-aware of the search trends described above. Over the last few months, our website has been ranking prominently on searches related to Guanacaste and Jaco Beach. Two of the Costa Rica Star’s most prominent advertisers, Hotel Chantel and Croc’s Casino, are seeing great results from advertising here due to the numerous leads generated from Google search queries that return content from news.co.cr.
