As the microbrewery and craft beer scene in Costa Rica expands to the country’s coastal areas, new festivals and special events are being planned. The next major craft beer event will take place in the Osa Peninsula in February, and organizers are excited to showcase a range of fine brews and malt beverages.

The First Annual Costa Ballena Beer Festival will take place on February 15, 2014 in Uvita de Osa, province of Puntarenas. According to the organizers, there will be multiple commercial and non-commercial craft brewers showcasing their best beers and meads in a variety of styles and flavors.

Aside from beer tastings and food to enhance the festival experience, guests will have an opportunity to learn about how each style is created and the various ingredients brewers in Costa Rica use to make their beers special.

The organizers have announced that the range of beers will include: Seasonal, India Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, Barley Wine, American and Tropical Lagers, Porters, Pale Ales, and Witbier. Confirmed brewers at this time include: Treinta y Cinco Fabrica de Cervezas, Costa Rica Meadery, Calle Cimarrona, and Perro Vida.

Tickets can be purchased online at the Ballena Beer Fest website. Each ticket costs between $32 and $73. The basic ticket includes 11 to 13 four-ounce tastings of beers ranging between five and 12 percent alcohol volume (ABV), plus two-ounce tastings of meads at 13 percent ABV. Since that is a very generous amount of beer and alcohol, designated drivers are encouraged and will get in to the festival for free, but they cannot engage in the tastings. Guests who pay more can also enjoy special tours and after parties.

Sponsors of the First Annual Costa Ballena Beer Festival include Rancho Diandrew, the Electric Garden, Costa Canyoning, Porque No? Restaurant, La Ballena Roja, and Adventure Motorsports.
