When it comes to celebrity endorsement, the world knows all too well about perfumes, colognes, clothing, and ********* beverages. It is no surprise that large catalog of celebrity-branded products would one day extend to coffee, and that day is now. From actors Leonardo DiCaprio to Hugh Jackman and from Bob Marley’s son to legendary Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer, the world is getting introduced to celebrity coffee. What does this mean to Costa Rica?
In a recent article in the International Style section of the New York Times, Kathleen Beckett explains the efforts of Grace Hightower, the beautiful and, as her name implies, graceful philanthropist wife of celebrated actor Robert DeNiro, to leverage the power of coffee as a prized commodity that can empower communities in need.
In 2011, Ms. Hightower traveled to the war-torn African nation of Rwanda with a benevolent intention in mind. She visited small coffee farms and took part in coffee cupping sessions to determine which beans to add to her Coffee of Grace catalog. It so happens that Ms. Hightower’s parent were farmers from the agricultural state of Mississippi, so she connected with these Rwandan farmers from whom she now purchases beans directly.
Ms. Hightower is not quite done yet. She told the New York Times that:
Im in talks with coffee farmers in Costa Rica, in Panama. My vision is to source coffee from around the world.
Ms. Hightower is the only celebrity mentioned by the New York Times whose plans may include purchasing beans from Costa Rica. If she does, and we really hope that will be the case, her coffee project would be similar to that of Illy Cafe from Italy, a company that practices fair trade directly with small growers and roasters from Costa Rica. As recently reported by The Costa Rica Star, the Italian coffee giant commissioned Canadian rock musician Alanis Morrissette to compose a song and video to serenate the women of Biolley, a highlands community in Puntarenas whose female coffee growers are good example of how communities should function.
