Bogota, May 9 (EFE).– Colombian police recovered a first-edition copy of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” with a dedication by the late Nobel laureate in Literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, which had been stolen from a showcase where it was being exhibited at the International Book Fair in Bogota, or Filbo, officials said.

The chief of police, Gen. Rodolfo Palomino, expressed gratitude on his Twitter account to the cops “who managed to recover the stolen book.”

At a press briefing hours later, the official said the copy was found at a store that sells artworks and antiquities in the La Perseverencia neighborhood of downtown Bogota, after the thieves saw there were police on the premises and abandoned the book.

Investigations indicate that the copy, which was not damaged because it was in a box, would likely have been sold to a foreign collector for around 120 million pesos (close to $51,000), Gen. Palomino said.

For his part, the owner of the prized first edition, bookseller and collector Alvaro Castillo, thanked the country for its solidarity. “The book no longer belongs to me,” he told the same press conference, “it belongs to Colombia,” and said he will donate the book to the Colombia National Library “because it is a national heritage.”

Gen. Palomino added that the thieves have not been caught, but that the investigations will eventually land them in jail.

The stolen copy of “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” Garcia Marquez’s most famous work,” has a dedication by the late “Gabo” to the book’s owner that reads “To Alvaro Castillo, shepherd of books, yesterday and always. Your friend, Gabriel.”

The theft was detected Saturday night by the Filbo organizers.

“One Hundred Years of Solitude” was first published in 1967 by the Editorial Sudamericana of Buenos Aires and since then became a phenomenon in world literature.

The stolen copy is one of the 8,000 books printed by the publisher 48 years ago. EFE
